Should You Choose Studded or Non-Studded Winter Tires?

Comparing Studded vs Non-Studded Winter Tires

When it comes time to get new winter tires, you might ask yourself if you should get tires with studs for the winter months. At Cambridge Centre Honda, we have the winter tire options that cover all the bases, and meet your specific driving needs. We'll give you some pointers to help you decide between studded and non-studded tires. Whatever you choose, keep in mind that winter driving requires skill. A predictable and calm driving style, the proper speed, and keeping a relaxed schedule improves winter driving safety and comfort.

Is the Road Snowy or Icy?

If you spend more time on icy roads than on snowy ones during the winter, studded tires are the way to go. Studded tires are particularly useful if you live near a body of water, where roads can become icy in the winter. For snowy roads, non-studded winter tires are a good option.

Black Ice and Hard-Pack Snow

If you have non-studded winter tires, be especially cautious at crossroads and other locations where there may be wet ice or hard-packed snow. On wet or black ice and hard-packed snow, studded tires outperform non-studded winter tires.

Tire Noise

Non-studded winter tires are the best option if you prefer tires that are quiet on bare roads. So keep that in mind if you live in an urban area where roads are plowed and/or salted often.

Unpredictable Fall Weather

Non-studded winter tires can be installed earlier than studded tires in the fall. You won't have to worry about rapidly changing road conditions in the fall months if you've installed non-studded winter tires. Non-studded winter tires are also a good option in the spring, when temperature swings can still be erratic.

Using Tires Year-Round?

Coarse spring roads that have yet to be cleaned can be especially taxing on all tires, and non-studded winter tires are primarily designed and intended for use in the winter. Non-studded winter tires worn unevenly by rough spring roads are no match for good summer tires. As a result, we do not recommend using non-studded winter tires as all-season tires. Summer tires or all-season tires are the safest and most cost-effective option for summer driving.
