2016 Daily News Autos Award Winner: Honda Pilot (BY BRIAN LEON of NEW YORK DAILY NEWS)Mar 16th, 2016
With the best combination of space, power, fuel economy, and affordability, the 2016 Honda Pilot is our Family SUV winner in the 2016 Daily News Autos Awards.
Starting at just $30,145 for the LX trim ($32,845 for all-wheel drive), the Pilot offers an impressive laundry list of features even in base spec, including active noise cancellation, a rearview camera, push-button start, Bluetooth connectivity and audio, and 18-inch alloy wheels.
All Pilots come equipped with a silky-smooth 3.5-liter V-6 that makes a respectable 280-horsepower and can get up to 27 highway miles-per-gallon. While that won’t touch the Toyota Highlander Hybrid in city driving, it’s only one mpg off from the electrified Toyota in highway mileage. Not bad for an old-school V-6.
A 6-speed automatic transmission is standard, and a 9-speed is available on upper trim levels. While 9 speeds sound great for fuel economy purposes, we found the transmission to be a bit indecisive even under normal driving conditions. Skip it if you don’t need the top-tier Pilot.
A fully-specced Pilot can run more than $50 grand, and gets you an absurd amount of features, including active driving assists and a rear seat entertainment system, but we recommend keeping many boxes unchecked and just sticking to the basics. With seating for up to eight occupants and a massive maximum cargo capacity of 83.8 cu.-ft., the Pilot is as close to a minivan as you can get, but with the added bonus of all-weather capability and 5,000 pounds of towing capacity. Sounds like a winner to us.
